Many people ask me before booking: do I need a coach or a therapist? It is an important question, because the right answer gets you to the right kind of help sooner.
I am an ICF-credentialed coach, not a therapist or a doctor. That is why I make sure this difference is clear to everyone who contacts me.
What is coaching?
Coaching is a professional relationship focused on the present and the future. The coach works with you to clarify what is happening, understand repeating patterns, explore your options and make your decisions and next steps with awareness. A coach does not diagnose or treat, and does not decide for you. A coach helps you see the picture clearly.
What is therapy?
Therapy is provided by licensed mental health professionals, such as psychiatrists and qualified psychotherapists. It is the right fit when there is psychological distress that needs specialist assessment and treatment, or when past experiences deeply affect your ability to get through daily life.
When coaching is often a good fit
- When you face an important decision in your relationship and need clarity.
- When you are preparing for marriage and want to understand each other's expectations.
- When you want to improve how you communicate and handle disagreements.
- When you are going through a separation and want to understand it and plan your next steps.
- When you notice a pattern repeating in your relationships and want to understand it.
When therapy is the better next step
- When intense sadness or anxiety lasts a long time and affects your sleep, work or relationships.
- When past trauma still affects you strongly.
- When there are issues such as addiction, eating difficulties or other conditions that need specialist care.
- When you have thoughts of harming yourself or someone else. In that case, contact a professional or emergency service immediately.
Choosing between coaching and therapy is not choosing between better and worse. It is choosing what fits your need right now.
Can you do both?
In some cases, yes, as long as each role is clear and it suits your situation. And if I notice during our sessions that what you are going through needs specialist psychological care, I will tell you clearly and help you think through the right next step. That is part of my commitment to professional ethics under the ICF standards.
